Case in point: The Washington Post's decision to fire columnist Dan Froomkin for reasons that remain unclear. The interesting part of the story is how quickly The Huffington Post hired Froomkin. As did his regular readers, who won't be reading Froomkin at the Post or any newspaper's site.

The question of how successful the news-oriented social media outlets have been at complementing or supplanting some of the functions of traditional print and broadcast media is far beyond the capacity of this one little blog post to handle. It's still worth noting how people in the business of content can badly fumble their handling of social media.
